How We Compare

Our Comparison Methodology

What We Check for Every Provider

We only add a provider to the comparison table once we can answer these five questions about it:

  • Does it sell an individual/hobbyist policy that doesn't require a business license, business name, or an existing home/rental policy with the same carrier?
  • What's the deductible — and is it different for domestic vs. international claims?
  • Does it cover international travel, not just domestic use?
  • Does it cover both theft and accidental breakage, not just one?
  • Is it actively writing new policies for California residents right now?

Where Our Data Comes From

We prioritize primary sources — a provider's own policy pages, FAQs, and quote flows — over secondhand "best camera insurance" roundup articles. Where a claim can't be confirmed directly from the provider's own materials, we say so rather than presenting it as fact. We also cross-check community reports (forums like DPReview and Reddit, review sites like Trustpilot) for real-world claims experiences and red flags — like a provider quietly requiring an existing home policy, or a pattern of denied claims — that a policy page alone wouldn't surface.

What "CA-Friendly" Means

California's property insurance market has tightened significantly — several major carriers have stopped writing new policies in the state entirely. The 🌴 CA-Friendly badge means we found a direct statement (usually the provider's own licensing page or application flow) confirming it's currently accepting new California applicants, not just that it hasn't explicitly excluded the state.

What the "Claims Risk" Tag Means

This is the one negative tag on the table, so it deserves an explanation. It doesn't mean a provider is a scam or won't pay claims — it means we found a specific, sourced, claims-handling concern worth knowing about before you buy:

  • Front Row Insurance — forum reports (DPReview, Cinematography.com) describe Front Row's underwriter (Chubb) declining to renew a policy after a single claim above roughly $3,800 USD — worth weighing if your kit is near or above that value.
  • State Farm — tagged for the structural reason covered in our California guide: gear claims filed on a bundled home policy get logged in C.L.U.E. and can affect your home insurance rate or renewal, separate from any camera-specific claims issue.

We'll remove or update this tag if a provider's terms or our sourcing changes — it reflects the most recent research pass, not a permanent verdict.

How Often We Update

The comparison table shows a "Last updated" date pulled directly from when this site was last built and deployed — it's not a hardcoded string we forget to change. Insurance products, deductibles, and state availability shift over time, so treat the table as a research starting point and always confirm current terms directly with the provider before buying.

Editorial Independence

If a provider is ever a paid or referral partner, that'll be clearly labeled — see our affiliate disclosure. A provider's ranking or inclusion in the main comparison table is never for sale; it's based on the criteria above.
